LAPD CCW Live-Fire Qualification Requirements

The following live-fire qualification standards reflect the requirements commonly used by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) applicants. These standards are used to evaluate a student's ability to safely handle and accurately operate their firearm during the range qualification portion of the course.

Under California Penal Code §26165(a)(6), the live-fire portion of a CCW course must include:

  • Live-fire shooting exercises conducted on a firing range
  • A demonstration of safe firearm handling
  • A demonstration of shooting proficiency with each firearm listed on the permit

While the State of California establishes these minimum requirements, the local issuing authority — such as LAPD — determines the exact qualification course, round count, distances, and passing score.

LAPD Qualification Overview

  • Applicants must qualify with each firearm listed on the permit.
  • The qualification is conducted using a series of timed and controlled shooting exercises.
  • Students must demonstrate safe firearm handling throughout the course.
  • All firearms must be inspected for safe operation prior to qualification.
